Tibetan Mastiff
Ancient Himalayan livestock guardian. Independent, nocturnal, fiercely territorial.
The Tibetan Mastiff is among the world's oldest dog breeds β guardians of nomadic flocks and Himalayan monasteries for thousands of years. Independent, territorial, slow to mature, and absolutely not a typical family pet.
Temperament
Independent, watchful, aloof, nocturnal (often barks at night). Strong territorial instincts.
Exercise needs
Moderate. Long walks plus a securely fenced yard.
Grooming
Massive double coat. Daily brushing during seasonal moults (which can last weeks).
Common health issues
Canine inherited demyelinative neuropathy (DNA test). Hip and elbow dysplasia. Hypothyroidism.

Experienced owners with secure rural / suburban properties.
π Not best for
Almost everyone else. Suburban neighbours hate the night barking.
