The Tibetan Mastiff is among the world's oldest dog breeds โ€” guardians of nomadic flocks and Himalayan monasteries for thousands of years. Independent, territorial, slow to mature, and absolutely not a typical family pet.

Temperament

Independent, watchful, aloof, nocturnal (often barks at night). Strong territorial instincts.

Exercise needs

Moderate. Long walks plus a securely fenced yard.

Grooming

Massive double coat. Daily brushing during seasonal moults (which can last weeks).

Common health issues

Canine inherited demyelinative neuropathy (DNA test). Hip and elbow dysplasia. Hypothyroidism.

๐Ÿ‘ Best for

Experienced owners with secure rural / suburban properties.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Not best for

Almost everyone else. Suburban neighbours hate the night barking.
