The Turkish Van originates from the Lake Van region of eastern Turkey, where the breed has existed for thousands of years. They're famously water-loving โ€” the breed is sometimes called "the swimming cat" for their unusual taste for swimming in lakes. The white-with-coloured-tail-and-cap pattern is distinctive.

Temperament

Affectionate, playful, athletic, sometimes possessive. Vans bond closely with their family but can be cool with strangers and other pets.

Exercise needs

Active. Need climbing, water play, interactive toys.

Grooming

Long silky single coat (no undercoat) โ€” surprisingly low-mat. Brush weekly.

Common health issues

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Hereditary deafness in white-eyed cats. Generally hardy.

๐Ÿ‘ Best for

Active families, owners who don't mind splashing, single-cat households.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Not best for

Multi-cat or multi-pet homes (Vans can be possessive).
