Four tools because one shape cannot do everything
Straight shears for length, curved for following the line of a face or paw, thinners for blending so you do not leave a step, and a comb to lift the coat before you cut. Trying to do all of that with kitchen scissors is how dogs end up with chunks missing.
Why round tips matter
- Safety around eyes and paws — a pointed tip and a dog that moves suddenly is exactly the accident you are trying to avoid.
- Thinning shears blend rather than cut a hard edge, which forgives an unsteady hand.
- Between-groom tidying — face, feet and rear, without a salon appointment.
Good to know
Trim in short sessions with the coat dry and brushed out. Never cut a mat out with scissors flat against the skin — a dog’s skin lifts into the mat and tears easily; that is one of the most common home-grooming injuries vets see. Leave full body clips to a groomer.
