Alaskan Malamute
The big freight-hauler of the Arctic. More powerful than a Husky, equally challenging.
Bred by the Mahlemut people of Alaska's Norton Sound to haul heavy freight over long distances, the Alaskan Malamute is larger and more powerful than the Siberian Husky. They're affectionate, sociable with people but often dog-aggressive β a serious working breed in a pet home is a misfit unless owners commit to real activity.
Temperament
Friendly, devoted, playful β with people. Often dog-aggressive, especially same-sex. High prey drive.
Exercise needs
120+ minutes of vigorous daily activity. Pulling, hiking, sledding.
Grooming
Heavy double coat β daily during seasonal moults.
Common health issues
Hip dysplasia. Cataracts. Polyneuropathy (DNA test). Chondrodysplasia. Bloat / GDV.

Experienced active owners in cool climates with secure yards.

First-time owners, hot climates, multi-dog same-sex homes.
