Basenji vs Shiba Inu

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Basenji vs Shiba Inu — at a glance

The Basenji (9–11 kg, 13–14 years) and the Shiba Inu (7–11 kg, 13–16 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Energy levels are well-matched between the Basenji and Shiba Inu — both need similar daily exercise.

Grooming is where these breeds really diverge: the Shiba Inu needs significantly more brushing, washing and coat care. Factor in €30–€80 every 6–8 weeks for a professional groomer if you don't do it yourself.

For allergy sufferers, the Basenji is the lower-shed, more hypoallergenic option.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

Basenji

Temperament

Independent, cat-like, mischievous. Affectionate with family but aloof with strangers. NOT a dog for someone who wants Labrador-style devotion — they're more like a dog-shaped cat.

Exercise

60+ minutes daily. Built for endurance, strong prey drive. Escape artists — secure 6ft fencing essential.

Grooming

Short coat, self-grooming. Brush weekly. Almost no doggy smell.

Health

Watch for: Fanconi syndrome (kidney disease, DNA test essential), progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism.

Shiba Inu

Temperament

Bold, alert, confident, independent. Shibas are known for the "Shiba scream" when handled in ways they dislike. They're aloof with strangers and can be dog-aggressive.

Exercise

60 minutes of daily exercise. Recall is famously unreliable — never trust off-lead.

Grooming

Double coat — brush 2× weekly, daily during the dramatic seasonal moults.

Health

Patellar luxation. Hip dysplasia. Eye conditions (glaucoma, cataracts). Allergies. Generally robust.
