The Shiba Inu is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world (DNA dating ~9,000 years). They were bred in mountainous Japan to hunt small game. Today they're internet-famous (the Doge meme) and known for fox-like looks, fierce independence and almost cat-like cleanliness.

Temperament

Bold, alert, confident, independent. Shibas are known for the "Shiba scream" when handled in ways they dislike. They're aloof with strangers and can be dog-aggressive.

Exercise needs

60 minutes of daily exercise. Recall is famously unreliable β€” never trust off-lead.

Grooming

Double coat β€” brush 2Γ— weekly, daily during the dramatic seasonal moults.

Common health issues

Patellar luxation. Hip dysplasia. Eye conditions (glaucoma, cataracts). Allergies. Generally robust.

πŸ‘ Best for

Experienced single-dog homes, owners who want an independent companion.

πŸ‘Ž Not best for

First-time owners, multi-pet homes, owners wanting a cuddly dog.
