One of the oldest known dog breeds, depicted in Egyptian tombs over 5,000 years old. Basenjis are remarkable: they don't bark (the larynx shape produces a yodel instead), they groom themselves cat-like, and females come into season only once a year (twice for most breeds).

Temperament

Independent, cat-like, mischievous. Affectionate with family but aloof with strangers. NOT a dog for someone who wants Labrador-style devotion — they're more like a dog-shaped cat.

Exercise needs

60+ minutes daily. Built for endurance, strong prey drive. Escape artists — secure 6ft fencing essential.

Grooming

Short coat, self-grooming. Brush weekly. Almost no doggy smell.

Common health issues

Watch for: Fanconi syndrome (kidney disease, DNA test essential), progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism.

👍 Best for

Experienced dog owners who appreciate independent breeds, allergy-tolerant homes.

👎 Not best for

First-time owners, multi-pet homes with small animals, owners expecting obedient companionship.
