The Cane Corso descends from Roman war dogs and was used in Italy as a farm guardian and hunter of large game. Almost extinct by the 1970s, the breed was rebuilt and is now popular as a working family guardian. Powerful, intelligent, deeply loyal — and absolutely not for inexperienced hands.

Temperament

Confident, watchful, loyal, aloof with strangers. Cane Corsos need clear leadership and lifelong socialisation.

Exercise needs

60–90 minutes of structured daily exercise plus mental work.

Grooming

Short coat, weekly brush.

Common health issues

Hip and elbow dysplasia. Bloat / GDV. Cherry eye. Demodectic mange in puppies. Idiopathic epilepsy.

👍 Best for

Experienced owners with secure properties. Single-dog homes.

👎 Not best for

First-time owners. Apartments. Households with frequent visitors and no time for training.
