Chow Chow vs Shiba Inu

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Chow Chow vs Shiba Inu — at a glance

The Chow Chow (20–32 kg, 8–12 years) and the Shiba Inu (7–11 kg, 13–16 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Shiba Inu is the significantly higher-energy dog of the two. If you can't commit to 60+ minutes of active exercise daily plus mental stimulation, the Chow Chow is the lower-friction choice.

Grooming is where these breeds really diverge: the Chow Chow needs significantly more brushing, washing and coat care. Factor in €30–€80 every 6–8 weeks for a professional groomer if you don't do it yourself.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

Aloof, dignified, loyal to one or two people. Chows are notoriously reserved with strangers and can be aggressive without serious early socialisation. Not naturally good with other dogs.

Exercise

30–45 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Heat-sensitive (heavy coat).

Grooming

Very heavy double coat — daily brushing. Two huge annual moults.

Health

Hip / elbow dysplasia. Entropion (eye lid rolls in). Heat stroke. Bloat / GDV. Lifespan 8–12 years (short for a medium dog).

Grooming

Double coat — brush 2× weekly, daily during the dramatic seasonal moults.
