English Setter
A gentle, beautiful gun dog with a flecked "belton" coat — high energy, low aggression, devoted family companion.
The English Setter was developed over 400 years ago to point and "set" game birds — crouching low to indicate scent for the hunter. Today their gentle temperament makes them outstanding family dogs, though their athleticism demands serious exercise. The flecked or "belton" coat (named after the village of Belton in Northumberland) is the breed's trademark.
Temperament
Sweet, gentle, devoted. Famously patient with children. Friendly with other dogs and even cats when raised together. Sensitive to harsh training — positive methods only.
Exercise needs
90+ minutes daily of off-lead running ideally. Built for endurance. Without enough exercise they become destructive.
Grooming
Long, silky, feathered coat needs brushing 2–3× weekly. Trim feathers around feet + ears every 6 weeks. Heavy seasonal shedding. Check ears weekly (long, floppy → infection prone).
Common health issues
Watch for: hip dysplasia, deafness (congenital, especially in heavily-spotted dogs), hypothyroidism, allergies, autoimmune issues.
👍 Best for
Active families with garden access, owners committed to daily long exercise, sensitive training households.
👎 Not best for
Apartment dwellers, sedentary households, harsh trainers.
