Irish Water Spaniel
A curly-coated water retrieving dog — the "clown of the spaniel family" with a bald rat-tail and waterproof curls.
One of Ireland's rarest native breeds, the Irish Water Spaniel has been retrieving in cold Irish lakes and bogs for over 1,000 years. Their dense liver-coloured curls form a virtually waterproof coat — the "rat tail" (bald, otter-like tail) helps with rudder steering. Goofy and characterful: known as the "clown of the spaniel family."
Temperament
Energetic, intelligent, mischievous. Bonds intensely with family. Reserved with strangers (not aggressive, just aloof). Loves water above all else — give them a pond, a paddling pool, or expect them to find puddles.
Exercise needs
60–90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise. Built for endurance. Swimming is non-negotiable — they're visibly happier when wet.
Grooming
Tight curls need brushing 2× weekly to prevent matting. Trim every 6–8 weeks to maintain coat shape. Non-shedding, considered hypoallergenic. Ear cleaning weekly (long, hairy, hangs in water → infection prone).
Common health issues
Generally healthy but rare = limited gene pool. Watch for: hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, follicular dysplasia (coat issues), drug sensitivities (avoid sulphonamides, ivermectin without testing).
👍 Best for
Active families near water, those wanting a hypoallergenic sporting dog, sense-of-humour required.
👎 Not best for
Apartment dwellers, owners who hate wet dogs, allergy-sensitive owners who haven't tested first.
