Leonberger
Lion-like German giant. Gentle, family-oriented, sadly short-lived.
The Leonberger was created in 19th-century Leonberg, Germany, with the goal of a lion-like dog symbolic of the town crest. Today's Leonberger is a calm, affectionate giant β wonderful with children and other pets β but with a tragically short lifespan.
Temperament
Calm, gentle, friendly, devoted. Excellent with children.
Exercise needs
60 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Cool conditions.
Grooming
Long heavy double coat. Brush 3Γ weekly, daily during seasonal moults.
Common health issues
Hip and elbow dysplasia. Bloat / GDV. Bone cancer. Leonberger polyneuropathy (DNA test). Heart conditions.
