Russian Blue vs Sphynx

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Russian Blue vs Sphynx — at a glance

The Russian Blue (3–5 kg, 15–20 years) and the Sphynx (3.5–5 kg, 8–14 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Sphynx is the significantly higher-energy dog of the two. If you can't commit to 60+ minutes of active exercise daily plus mental stimulation, the Russian Blue is the lower-friction choice.

Grooming is where these breeds really diverge: the Sphynx needs significantly more brushing, washing and coat care. Factor in €30–€80 every 6–8 weeks for a professional groomer if you don't do it yourself.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

Russian Blue Russian Blue

Temperament

Quiet, gentle, reserved with strangers, deeply loyal to family. Russian Blues bond closely with one or two people and dislike change in routine.

Exercise

Moderate. Like routine play sessions and food puzzles.

Grooming

Short, dense double coat. Weekly brushing is enough.

Health

Generally one of the healthiest and longest-lived breeds (often 17+). Watch for: bladder stones, obesity (they're food-motivated and not very active).

Sphynx Sphynx

Temperament

Energetic, mischievous, intensely social, attention-seeking. Sphynx cats often follow their humans like dogs and can be jealous of a single owner's attention.

Exercise

Very active. Need play, climbing, mental enrichment. Many do well with another cat for company.

Grooming

Surprisingly high. Weekly bathing is essential — skin oils that fur normally absorbs build up on the skin. Wipe ears weekly. Sphynx feel cold easily and may need sweaters in winter.

Health

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM — DNA test). Skin issues. Heat sensitivity (sunburn risk). Dental disease.
