Saluki
An ancient royal sighthound from the Fertile Crescent — elegant, dignified, with phenomenal speed.
Possibly the oldest pure breed of dog still extant, with depictions on Sumerian carvings from 7,000 BCE. Salukis hunted gazelle for Bedouin nobility. Two coat types: smooth and feathered.
Temperament
Reserved, sensitive, deeply bonded to family. Aloof with strangers. Quiet indoors but exceptional athletes outdoors.
Exercise needs
60+ minutes daily including off-lead sprinting. Built for desert distance running.
Grooming
Smooth coat: weekly brush. Feathered: 2–3× weekly with attention to ears + tail.
Common health issues
Generally healthy. Watch for: cardiac issues, hypothyroidism, hemangiosarcoma, anaesthesia sensitivity (sighthounds metabolise drugs differently — vet must know).
👍 Best for
Quiet, experienced owners with secure fencing + commitment to daily running.
👎 Not best for
First-time owners, homes with small fluffy pets, urban environments.
