Chinese Shar-Pei
Iconic wrinkled Chinese guardian. Aloof, independent, with serious health concerns.
The Chinese Shar-Pei has guarded southern China for over 2,000 years. Famously wrinkled (especially as puppies), the breed was nearly lost during the Communist purge of dogs in 1950s China and rebuilt from a small population β leading to several inherited health issues.
Temperament
Calm, devoted, suspicious of strangers, sometimes dog-aggressive.
Exercise needs
45β60 minutes daily.
Grooming
Short coat, weekly brush. Wrinkles need weekly cleaning to prevent dermatitis.
Common health issues
Familial Shar-Pei fever (POAG-FSF). Entropion (eyelid surgery often needed). Skin fold dermatitis. Amyloidosis.
