Smaller cousin of the Rough Collie. Bright, sensitive, brilliant at agility.
The Shetland Sheepdog ("Sheltie") was developed on Scotland's Shetland Isles to herd small sheep, ponies and chickens. Looks like a miniature Rough Collie. Brilliantly trainable and sensitive.
Temperament
Bright, sensitive, devoted, vocal. Excellent with families.
Exercise needs
60β90 minutes daily plus mental work. Excels at agility, herding trials, obedience.
Grooming
Long double coat. Brush 3Γ weekly, daily during seasonal moults.
Common health issues
Collie eye anomaly (DNA test). MDR1 drug sensitivity (DNA test). Dermatomyositis. Von Willebrand's.
