The Border Terrier was bred in the borderlands between Scotland and England to bolt foxes from their dens — and to keep up with horses on long hunts. Of all the terriers, Borders are among the most easy-going with people, kids and other dogs.

Temperament

Affectionate, plucky, biddable, alert. One of the most family-friendly terrier breeds.

Exercise needs

60–90 minutes a day. Hardy and weather-tolerant.

Grooming

Wire double coat. Hand-strip twice yearly; weekly brush. Sheds little.

Common health issues

Generally hardy. Watch for: hip dysplasia, heart issues, Spike's disease (CECS), seizures.
