The Burmese descends from a single brown cat called Wong Mau brought from Rangoon to America in 1930. Crossed with Siamese, Wong Mau's descendants founded the modern Burmese breed. Today's Burmese are famously affectionate, social and dog-like β€” often following their humans around the house.

Temperament

Affectionate, sociable, playful, vocal (less so than Siamese). Burmese love everyone in the family and tend to remain kitten-like for years.

Exercise needs

Active and play-driven. Food puzzles, interactive toys, harness walks.

Grooming

Short satin coat. Weekly brush.

Common health issues

Hypokalaemic polymyopathy (DNA test). Diabetes (over-represented). Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Burmese head defect (rare).
