Field Spaniel
A rare English working spaniel — quieter than a Cocker, more elegant than a Sussex, devoted family companion.
Developed in 19th-century England as a sporting alternative to the show-bred Cocker. Nearly went extinct in the 1950s — survival owed to a handful of devoted breeders. Still rare, with fewer than 200 puppies registered annually in the UK.
Temperament
Affectionate, sensitive, eager to please. Less hyper than Cocker Spaniels, less heavy than Sussex. Bonds deeply.
Exercise needs
45–60 minutes daily. Loves field work, swimming, scent games.
Grooming
Long silky coat with feathering — brush 2–3× weekly. Trim feet + ears every 6–8 weeks.
Common health issues
Watch for: hip dysplasia, ear infections (drooping ears + active dog = problem), thyroid issues, eye conditions.
👍 Best for
Active families with kids, allergy-tolerant homes, owners wanting a rare gun-dog breed.
👎 Not best for
Time-poor groomers, sedentary households.
