Great Pyrenees (Pyrenean Mountain Dog)
A majestic white livestock guardian — calm at home, fearless in the field, with a thick double coat for the high Pyrenees.
Bred for centuries to guard sheep against wolves + bears in the Pyrenees mountains. Great Pyrenees are independent thinkers — they had to make life-or-death decisions alone, miles from a shepherd. This makes them gentle giants at home but stubborn when asked to obey "just because."
Temperament
Calm, patient, deeply protective. Bonds with the entire family + any other animals in it. Reserved with strangers, vocal at night (they bark to warn off intruders — historically wolves, now postmen).
Exercise needs
30–45 minutes daily — low energy for size. Built for cold weather, struggles in heat.
Grooming
Thick white double coat sheds heavily, especially seasonally. Brush 3× weekly minimum.
Common health issues
Watch for: hip + elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, osteosarcoma, bloat (GDV), neurological issues.
👍 Best for
Rural families with land + livestock, owners who appreciate independent breeds.
👎 Not best for
Urban apartments, owners expecting Labrador-style obedience, hot climates without AC.
