The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is Ireland's native farm-and-family terrier — used for centuries on small farms to herd, guard and hunt vermin. Their soft, low-shedding coat makes them one of the more allergy-friendly terriers.

Temperament

Friendly, energetic, less feisty than other terriers, very people-oriented.

Exercise needs

60–90 minutes daily.

Grooming

Long silky single coat. Daily brushing prevents matting; trim every 6–8 weeks.

Common health issues

Protein-losing enteropathy and nephropathy (PLE/PLN — annual blood/urine screening from age 5). Renal dysplasia. Addison's disease.

👍 Best for

Allergy-sensitive families, active homes, multi-pet households.

👎 Not best for

Owners who can't commit to grooming.
