The Standard Schnauzer is the original German Schnauzer — a 15th-century farm dog used to guard livestock, drive carts and catch vermin. The Miniature and Giant Schnauzer were derived from this medium-sized base.
Temperament
Alert, devoted, lively, intelligent. Excellent with families.
Exercise needs
60–90 minutes daily plus mental work.
Grooming
Wire double coat. Hand-strip or clip every 8 weeks. Doesn't shed.
Common health issues
Hip dysplasia. Hypothyroidism. Cataracts.
