Bred in Germany to control rats in stables + shops. The name means "ape-like pinscher" — refers to their distinctive expressive face. One of the older toy breeds, kept by 17th-century European nobility.
Temperament
Confident, curious, mischievous. Forms close family bonds. Less yappy than many toy breeds.
Exercise needs
30–45 minutes daily.
Grooming
Rough wire coat needs hand-stripping every 3–4 months + weekly brush.
Common health issues
Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia (rare for size), heart issues, brachycephalic-lite (mild airway).
