Komondor
A massive Hungarian livestock guardian with white corded coat — calm at home, fearsome with intruders.
Sister breed to the Puli but much larger, bred to guard sheep against wolves + bears. The corded white coat camouflaged them among flocks. One of the largest working dogs in the world.
Temperament
Calm, independent, deeply protective. Affectionate with family + livestock. Suspicious of strangers — barks first, asks questions later.
Exercise needs
45–60 minutes daily — low energy for size.
Grooming
High-maintenance corded coat — months of separating cords, careful drying. Owners often choose between full cords + a clip.
Common health issues
Watch for: hip dysplasia, bloat (GDV), entropion, juvenile cataracts.
👍 Best for
Experienced large-breed owners with livestock or rural property, families with secure fencing.
👎 Not best for
Urban households, first-time owners, anyone uncomfortable with a protective dog.
