Welsh Terrier
Looks like a miniature Airedale — wiry, hypoallergenic, with classic terrier confidence.
The Welsh Terrier is one of the oldest British breeds, used historically to hunt foxes, badgers and otters in the Welsh hills. Often described as a miniature Airedale, but with its own distinct character. Wire coat is virtually non-shedding — popular with allergy-conscious owners who can handle terrier energy.
Temperament
Confident, alert, friendly. Less prey-driven than many terriers (Welshies are happier with people than chasing). Stubborn streak when training — bored Welsh Terriers become escape artists.
Exercise needs
60+ minutes daily. High energy, athletic, loves digging + chasing.
Grooming
Wire coat: brush weekly, hand-strip every 3–4 months (clipper-trimming softens texture). Bathe monthly. Trim around eyes + ears every 6 weeks.
Common health issues
Generally healthy. Watch for: glaucoma, hypothyroidism, allergies, hip dysplasia (rare for size).
👍 Best for
Active allergy-conscious families, those wanting terrier personality without max prey drive.
👎 Not best for
Couch potatoes, owners unwilling to hand-strip or pay groomer.
