The West Highland White Terrier was developed in 19th-century Scotland to hunt fox and badger. The all-white coat allowed hunters to spot dogs in dense undergrowth. Today's Westie is a confident, alert, compact companion with terrier independence.

Temperament

Bold, confident, friendly, alert. Westies make excellent watchdogs (they bark) but are generally good with family. Some can be reactive with other dogs.

45–60 minutes daily plus mental work. They have terrier energy.

Grooming

Wire double coat. Brush 2–3× weekly. Hand-strip or clip every 8–10 weeks.

Common health issues

Atopic dermatitis (very common). Westie lung disease (pulmonary fibrosis). Patellar luxation. Globoid cell leukodystrophy (DNA test).

👍 Best for

Allergy-sensitive families, urban / suburban homes.

Owners who hate barking.
